The Reiner Lemoine Institute is currently working with the Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr (IAV), the consulting firm consulting4drive, and DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik GmbH to develop a hydrogen strategy for the Chemnitz model region. The intention of this project is the application of hydrogen technology in the mobility and heating sector, as well as the support of the transformation of the Saxon automotive industry.

Dr. Ingmar Hartung, team leader for hydrogen infrastructure and electrolysis at IAV, says: "We will take up the many ideas that already exist here and design a functioning hydrogen economy that shapes infrastructure and logistics, promotes sector coupling and strengthens independence from natural gas and other fossil energies.

Hydrogen is fundamental for climate protection and thus also for the value creation of the future. Together with partner organizations, the RLI will develop a strategy for the future use of hydrogen in the southwestern region of the Free State of Saxony by September 2023, on behalf of the City of Chemnitz. The city of Chemnitz is already supported by the hydrogen cluster HZwo e.V.. The project to develop a hydrogen region in Saxony is being funded with up to 400,000 euros by the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Program (NIP2). The funding directive is coordinated by NOW GmbH, and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

"The city of Chemnitz is virtually predestined as a hydrogen technology region in national and international comparison. The numerous innovative craft enterprises located in Chemnitz, the excellent scientific landscape as well as the local politics and administration underline this. Our aspiration is to bring together economic development and climate protection in order to provide security and prosperity for our region and the people who live and work here," says Mayor of the City of Chemnitz, Sven Schulze.

The four partner organizations were awarded the consulting project in a tender of the HyExpert model region (Chemnitz, as well as the districts of Zwickau, Mittelsachsen, Vogtland and Erzgebirge).
